Located at 60 Foster Street in Worcester, MA, the WRTA Central Hub is an important connection point for riders throughout the region. On January 5, 2026, construction began on a lobby renovation project designed to enhance the customer experience and create a more welcoming, accessible, and functional space for passengers. The project included increased seating capacity, dedicated space for individuals using mobility devices, a new customer service office with an exterior walk-up window, and improvements to the facility’s security, ADA intake, and office spaces. The renovation also included the reopening of the restrooms with an airport-style, open-access design. The completed lobby officially reopened to the public on Friday, August 28, 2026.
An Accessible and Welcoming Transit Experience
The lobby renovation incorporated accessibility features throughout the building and onto the bus platform, helping passengers navigate the facility safely and independently.
Inside the Building
Upon entering through either the north or south entrance, passengers follow tactile strips and intersection domes that provided wayfinding to key destinations, including the customer service window, restrooms, and seating area. Hallways, doorways, and key points of interest, including customer service, security, and restrooms, are also identified with ADA-compliant plaques featuring Braille.
The main seating area includes dedicated space for two wheelchair users, providing greater accessibility and accommodating passengers with mobility devices.
Both entrances feature sensor-operated sliding doors, making entry and exit more convenient and accessible for passengers with visual impairments and mobility challenges.
From the Lobby to the Bus Platform
As passengers make their way to the platform, tactile strips, domes, and a white cane strip provide additional accessibility and wayfinding cues, helping visually impaired passengers navigate the space.
Once on the platform, passengers have access to four Falcon audio buttons, which audibly announced departure times and provided important travel information for passengers who are blind or have low vision.
Accessible Passenger Information
Passengers who are deaf or hard of hearing can access real-time video display screens located in both the lobby and on the platform, providing visual access to important transit information.
