Effective January 1, 2009, the WRTA will be implementing a fare increase of $0.25. This is the first fare increase since 2003. The WRTA relies entirely upon gas and diesel fuel to operate its bus system, and recent spikes in the fuel market have had a negative impact on our ability to adequately finance this service. The WRTA is committed to securing alternative fuel source buses to minimize our dependency on fossil fuel.
When the WRTA conducted ten (10) public hearings to discuss service cuts in the Fall of 2008, some individuals indicated they would prefer a fare increase over the elimination of vital service. In addition to the fare increase, the WRTA is simplifying the fare structure with the elimination of zones and transfers.
The WRTA is also introducing a new One Day pass which can be purchased on the bus at a cost of $3.50 (or $1.75 for elderly/disabled and ADA eligible customers). The One Day Pass is equal to the cost of two fares and two transfers and has the added value of being valid on the entire WRTA fixed route bus system for the whole day.
The WRTA will periodically update and remind you of these changes as we approach the January 1, 2009 implementation date. Here are some important dates to remember:
