WORCESTER, MA. July 8, 2008 — The Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA) along with other public transportation systems across the country recently participated in the third annual Dump the Pump Day, held June 19. Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the day was designed to not only bring awareness to the environment, but also to help to save money, conserve gas, and help to reduce greenhouse gases.
“This day was a success on many different fronts,” said WRTA Administrator Stephen O’Neil. “Not only did we help the environment, but we also were able to give the public a chance to experience all the WRTA has to offer. It’s our hope that many first-time riders, as well as those who have ridden with us before, will choose to take public transportation more often.”
As part of the promotion to convince riders to try public transportation, the WRTA offered free transfers for all passengers that day only who used its fixed bus route service. In addition, the WRTA held a drawing for all riders who mailed in their unused transfers (date-stamped by a WRTA driver) for that day. Three winners who each received a 31-day all zone pass, included Jagamya Vijayaraghavan of Worcester, Lois Wade of Shrewsbury and Richard Ianno of Worcester.
